For the cleaning of carpets, we use the hot water extraction cleaning method, also commonly referred to as carpet steam cleaning. This process involves spraying a mist like cleaning solution of water and chemical onto the surface of the carpet, which is then rigorously scrubbed using a wand as displayed in the adjacent picture. While undergoing this process, the excess water is then simultaneously sucked up, producing quite astonishing cleaning results and removal of stains from the carpet.
Please Be Patient
On average the cleaning time for a medium sized room should be about thirty minutes. However, due to all the different types of carpeting which is found in various homes and offices, the cleaning time can significantly increase. For example, a thick carpet which is very dirty, would require deep cleaning and this could take three to four times longer to clean than normal standard carpet which only needs basic, routine cleaning.
What we would however advise our clients, is not to worry too much about the cleaning time, but to focus on the end result instead.
To assist with stain removal from carpets, we use special degreasing agents and emulsifiers on the problem areas, which we pre treat prior to the actual cleaning process, this greatly assists in dissolving and removing stains from carpets.
This process produces extremely positive results, leaving stained and high traffic areas very clean.
Although we have a lot of success with spot removal, there are however some instances where it is scientifically impossible to remove spots and stains from a carpet, this is because there are many types of substances that could permanently stain and discolour virtually any material, including your carpet, should it ever come into contact with such, making stain removal impossible in such a case. A few examples include; ink, dye, nail polish, red wine, household bleach and many more. Accidents involving these should prevented rather than attempting any sort of cure.
Another important factor to consider, is that different types of carpet fibres respond differently to the cleaning of spots and stains. A notable example, would be to compare the stain removal qualities of a "stain proof" polypropylene carpet, from which even ink can be removed, to that of a wool or nylon carpet where a blot of ink would become permanent.
A competent carpet cleaning company should be able to give you the correct advice prior to undertaking a spot removal process.
During the cleaning process, we use a combination of very strong disinfectant and deodoriser to help eliminate, and kill the bacteria that causes the bad odour which is associated with dirty carpets.
There are however certain situations, where odour removal is completely impossible, especially where untrained pets are kept indoors.
The pet urine that continuously absorbed into the carpet, eventually does produce an unbearable, as well as permanent smell, with no amount of clearing and disinfecting able to eliminate the smell.
We make use of a very potent disinfectant, that is mixed into our cleaning detergent, this goes to work immediately, helping to eliminate and eradicate germs and bacteria that may be found within the carpet fibres, also helping to prevent any possible spreading of such.
The disinfecting of carpets should be taken very serious, as this may help in the prevention of any possible sickness and disease, that could be associated with dirty carpets, especially when untrained, household pets frequent the home. The risk further increased, should small children come into any contact with any pet urine that is embedded within the carpet.
A certain way to help fight, as well as prevent the spread of germs in your home, is to make sure that your carpets are disinfected when having them professionally cleaned.
Generally, the drying time of carpets that have been professionally cleaned should not exceed a period of 12 - 24 hours.
There are however a few factors that could either prolong or reduce the drying of the carpet.
Badly soiled carpets are one of those factors, as they take significantly longer to dry, due to the need for them to be repeatedly cleaned in certain areas in order to achieve the desired result, as stains are unable to be removed with just a single cycle. This inevitably results in the use of more water which causes a wetter surface and a longer drying time. This is in stark contrast to carpets that only require basic cleaning, which uses less water, and dry much quicker.
Another factor that increases drying time, is the density of a carpet, with very thick carpets taking considerably longer to dry compared to carpets with a very short pile.
Weather conditions also impact on the drying time, with the hot summer days an ideal time for the washing of carpets, compared to the cold winter months when it drying takes a very long time indeed
The worst possible scenario, would be to have a very thick carpet, which is badly soiled to be cleaned in the middle of winter, this would take at least 2 - 3 days to dry.
So for those who want a quick drying time, the summer months are definitely recommended.
The simple anser is Yes.. although it is advisable to wait until the carpets have dried completely before being put into use. We do realise however that this is not always possible, we would therefore that if you really have to walk on the damp carpet, just make sure that the bottom of your feet are perfectly clean to prevent any black marks from attaching to the surface.
This practise however, can be dangerous, especially when walking from the damp carpet onto the smooth slippery surface of ceramic tiles, so extreme caution necessary in this situation.
Placing towels across the entire surface is another solution, this also speeds up the drying time as excess water is absorbed into the towels and it also prevents any premature staining in the process that may be caused by dirty feet.
Stains and marks reappearing on the surface very soon after the washing, steam cleaning or dry cleaning of carpets, does seem to be a relatively common occurrence in the industry, and is prevalent in both domestic as well as commercial carpet cleaning projects.
There are a number of reasons for this, but unfortunately the client is often left in the dark as to the actual cause of this.
The age of the carpet has great influence on stains reappearing on the surface of the carpet, as dirt that accumulated over the years, is deeply embedded into the carpet fibres, and tend to surface a few days after the carpet has been cleaned.
Accidental spills that are not mopped up immediately also get absorbed into the fibres, and are also likely to surface after carpets have been professionally cleaned.
Poor care and maintenance of a carpet is the main cause of stains coming to the surface, as it is left to build up over a long period of time, it becomes increasingly difficult to eradicate with a single clean.
Professional carpet cleaners are partly to blame, because they leave a sticky residue on the surface of the carpet, which is produced by the chemical detergent which is sprayed onto the carpet. This can however be avoided if the cleaners do a thorough rinse of the carpet, this is easier said than done, as most companies try to get as many jobs as possible to be completed in a single day. This is sadly to the detriment of the client, as the rinsing process which is a vital part of carpet cleaning, is usually overlooked.
The best way then to solve this problem would be one of prevention, where the carpet is given regular, proper care and maintenance, which includes vacuuming.
Carpet manufacturers recommend that carpets be professionally cleaned once a year, however, we would prefer to differ with that recommendation, and suggest instead that a cleaning company should be called in, if and when the need arises. This could be two, three or four times a year, depending on the current condition of the carpet and how badly soiled it is.
This is greatly due to the fact that the cleaning needs of each and every household being completely different, with some requiring a cleaning service very regularly compared to others who only need it less frequently.
